	Since 2015, I have been teaching in different architecture faculties, primarly as assistant professor in Politecnico di Milano (for design studios and international workshops) and in USI Accademia di Mendrisio; more recently I have been main tutor of intensive workshops &#38;nbsp;(in Paris EAVT). Aside academic teaching, I have promoted experimental pedagogies, based on self-organisation, autonomous production and inside alternative non-institutional locations.

	Francesca Gotti is an architect and researcher, investigating practices of empowerment through spatial intervetions and simulations. She holds a Ph.D. from Politecnico di Milano about critical spatial practices in South Europe. Between 2019-2021 she has been research fellow at DASTU for the European project “En/counter/points”, on participatory reactivations of neglected urban spaces and in 2025 at UniPv for the project COSMO on urban commons and self-building practices. In 2021 and 2022 she was assistant professor at USI Academy of Mendrisio for the design studio NEOTOPIA lead by Leopold Banchini. Since 2015, she mediates projects of reuse of urban commons in Bergamo, through shared management and self-built interventions. Since 2016, she is part of the editorial board of ARK magazine (Bergamo), curating a column on the re-appropriation of the neglected landscape of Lombardia.

	Software-ing Spaces Winter School 2023 was a spatial experiment aiming to collectively cultivate all those things an urban communal place needs to render it inviting, usable, perceptible, and autonomous. It’s an occasion for an on-site living and learning-by-constructing experience, envisioning objects we can design inside of a place – the software inside of the spatial hardware – through experiencing, soft-waring, the space together. 

For the duration of one week, the Winter School participants&#38;nbsp; lived and worked together inside the historic spaces of the former prison and monastery Sant’Agata (ExSA) in the Old Town of Bergamo – creating space while inhabiting it. Presenting itself as a nearly empty, shell-like environment, the challenge of the Winter School was to collectively envision ways of actively inhabiting this spatial hardware through the means of designing and constructing physical objects, a multifunctional software. Having to meet the prerequisites of modularity, reusability, and re-application, the designed objects did not only serve the immediate use of a space for the community of Bergamo, but became a manifesto for a way of reappropriating our urban commons in a more dynamic way, as the objects to be designed, same as ourselves, need to be able to migrate to other spaces. 

In this sense, the workshop can be seen as an experimentation for future projects of temporary occupation of common goods and participative design. The design projects, then, will support and accompany the creative community of ExSA in the future projects of engaging with our urban commons and open them to the public, in Bergamo and elsewhere.
	The Winter School is originated from and based on the work developed since 2015 by Associazione Maite, an association that promotes socio-cultural initiatives. In the last years Sant’Agata has been collectively managed by different groups and individuals coordinated by Maite and So.No. - Società Nomade. These associations are the official hosts of the Winter School and the main collaborators for the activities.Francesca Gotti and Yona Catrina Schreyer (architect, researcher at Politecnico di Milano, and member of So.No.) are the Organizers and coordinators of the Winter School.

The workshop was divided into four studios, led by four different design collectives: Studio Cucina led by Mascha Fehse&#38;amp;Licia Soldavini (Berlin); Studio Salotto led by Guerilla Architects (Berlin); Studio Corridoio led by Camposaz (Italy); Studio Parole led by Collettivo Franco (Bologna). Tutors included artist Janela Kostova (Milano) and architect Giuseppe Greppi from Zattere (Milano).

	In rural tradition, during winter time, families used to gather in the barn to mend clothes, repair farming tools and fix furnitures, while workers would travel around villages as experts of pottery and umbrellas repairing. As Michael Wolf photo series “Bastard chairs” (2002) portrays, repair continues to be a daily activity for people who needs to fight the programmed obsolescence of the products that the market offers.CHER MÉTIS is a collective experiment of repairing, from the scale of the object to that of the space. CHER MÉTIS is exploring the territory, finding discarded resources, imagining new uses and new meanings, collecting memories and inventing new stories. CHER MÉTIS is creating knowledge, taking care of each other, activating the potential of artefacts.Tracing the entire working process of each artefact is a way to narrate the relationship between the person repairing the object and the object itself, to share the expertise it requires, the steps it take to turn a rejected object into a new story.CHER MÉTIS means “Dear Mestizo”, an ode to the hybrid forms of things, of transformations, of all that remains and that stratifies through time. MÉTIS&#38;nbsp;is also a classic Greek term that designates knowledge acquired through practical experience. CHER MÉTIS is an anarchic act of salvation, an act of&#38;nbsp;love for the objects that inhabit our lives, an act of love for what we produce, abandon, and rediscover over and over.


	CHER MÉTIS was conceived in the context of the Winter School 2023 at EAVT Peris Est, in February 2023, curated by Iris Lacoudre.

	NEOTOPIA is searching for neo-vernacular utopias to counterbalance our dystopian present. We choose to see architecture as the visible outcome of political situations. As such, buildings are the material evidence of a social and economic history and cannot be understood as autonomous forms. NEOTOPIA is interested in contemporary informal architectures; what we like to call the neo-vernacular. Although often born from social injustice, self-built urban environments can be seen as the physical result of a temporary utopia. They are the result of the direct conjunction of human needs and economic factors, free from the mediation of the architect or the control of the legislative power. Avoiding the aestheticisation of poverty, we look at these architectures driven by a strict economy rather than abstract concepts and question top-down approaches to architecture. Far from the groomed city centres, our studio looks at the forgotten suburbs of the neo-capitalist landscape. For the first two semesters, we have studied the outskirts of Lisbon (Portugal) and the greenhouses area of Almeria (Spain); a diverse city at the crossroads of colonisation and migration routes. We look at architecture through the lens of workmanship and understand the act of building as an Action. Manual labour and the economy of means guide us through the process of design, using human movement as a starting point. Far from formalism, we create architectures born from the deep understanding of the often-painful act of construction and see architecture as a social and political act rather than a design exercise.
	NEOTOPIA is the design studio led by architect Leopold Banchini (Geneva) at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio (Swtizerland), since 2021, where I am teacher assistant together with Pablo Garrido Arnaiz (Basel).

	LA SPARIZIONE
Participated intervention2021When in 1938 Orson Welles adapted the romance “The War of the Worlds” during the radio programme “The Mercury Theatre on the Air”, playing it as a real journalistic news, someone from the audience believed that the Earth was actually under extra-terrestrial attack.&#38;nbsp;

The power of the media such as the radio in the 30s and the great interpretation of Welles achieved a rather unexpected result, producing indignation and raising protest against broadcasters.

What would happen if to be announced in the streets of Perugia was the relocation of the Fontana del Nettuno?
In the past years, statues in many European cities have been protagonists of protests, targeted as symbols of colonialism and fascisms. A statue is a totemic object, with symbolic values, an instrument to communciate a message.

Reflecting on the value and the role of the fountain, we proposed to make a provocation which is at the same time an excuse to train care and activism.

	
The intervention was based on the fictional announcement that the fountain was to be removed from its location and acquired by a private foundation. A promotional campaign with posters and video and a construction site were realised to create credibility around the fiction. In parallel, a protest group was promoted by the partners of Edicola518 to create a counter voice.
During the artistic residency week, we collected and recorded people’s opinions from social medias and live in the streets with interviews, to keep track of the ongoing debate around the news.
On the last day we organised a public meeting, with the aim of gathering support against the removal of the fountain: on that day we revealed the fiction of the intervention and we gave the stage to people to express their opinion about the privatisation of public domain, civic responsibility, commons, urban activism.
The project was selected through the Call for Artists launched by Edicola518 and Teatro Sant’Ercolano. With the support of Coop Centro Italia Sezione Soci Perugia 1.

	SE QUEI MURI POTESSERO PARLARE&#38;nbsp;Exhibition design
2021
Exhibition curated by ISREC (Istituto Storia della Resistenza e dell’Età Contemporanea) and MAITE Association, in the former prison of Sant’Agata, Bergamo. The space dedicated to SE QUEI MURI is the second floor of the building, the one that best testifies the condition of the place at the time of its closure (in 1980); here, a long corridor gives access to six separated units, once the prison cells.The exhibition reflects on the role of the prison during the last year of the fascist occupation of the city of Bergamo.&#38;nbsp;The research conducted by ISREC during 2018-2020 gathered a relevant amount of written documents and some archive objects.
 The curatorial choice was to exhibit only some of the most distinctive materials, using them as representative elements of defined thematic clusters, each corresponding to a specific spatial unit: 1)&#38;nbsp;community, 2) body, 3) genre, 4) the other, 5) communication, 6) place.

	
The installation is developed through few recurring narrative devices: the centre of each unit is a totem, containing an archive object from the Prison archive, around which the other elements gravitate; on the walls and inside the niches are accomodated shelves, projections and curtains  reproducing original documents, pictures, citations coming from ISREC archive.The totems are the most figurative components as they evoke familiar equipments - an altar, a bedroom, a door, a window, a drawer, a cabinet - building a specific storytelling for each object.A light bright veil is the recurrent material, it covers the totems and it is used to print reproductions and citations. The role of the fabric is to recreate an ambience of suspension, of something which has been emptied and is waiting to be re-inhabited: the veils are nesteled on the objects and windows as to protect them from light and dust, or as clothes hanging out to dry.All pictures are taken by Giovanni Emilio Galanello g-e-galanello.eu
